How Much Will These Types Of Heating Cost To Install?

Which Is Cheaper To Run – Radiators or Underfloor Heating?

Both systems work differently and use energy in different ways. Underfloor heating only needs to be a couple of degrees warmer than room temperature to work efficiently, and can keep a room at a constant temperature for hours. Whilst underfloor heating systems take longer to warm up than radiators, they stay warm for longer, effectively using less energy.

Radiators on the other hand, will heat up quickly and stay warm until you turn them down. Radiators do however, create both hot and cold spots depending on where you are in the room. To combat this, it is tempting to keep turning the thermostat up, which increases energy usage and can cost you much more than you think.

How Do Radiators And Underfloor Heating Distribute Heat?

Traditional radiators systems produce heat by heating the air surrounding them using convection. Warm air rises towards to ceiling, and once it has cooled down again it falls back down to be re-heated by the convection of the radiator. This creates a flow of hot and cold air than can lead to cold spots in any room.

Underfloor heating however, produces radiant heat that provides warmth from the floor up without creating any unwanted cold spots or reduction in area quality from re-circulated air.

Which System Is More Energy Efficient? Radiators or Underfloor Heating?

Because of the unique way in which underfloor heating radiates through the floor, it effectively turns the whole area into one big heat source. The large surface area means it doesn’t have to be a high temperature to warm the room, and can be as little as few degrees warmer than the air temperature. Because of this, underfloor heating uses as much as 15-40% less energy than traditional radiators.

Radiators tend to waste heat through cold spots, which can mean that you continually turn up the thermostat to feel warm everywhere. This is far less energy efficient and will increase you heating bills over the longer term.
