Are Carpets Suitable for Underfloor Heating?
When clients choose wet underfloor heating systems they’re often attracted by the luxury of having the floor as your heat source. For some, luxury means a wooden floor and bare feet all year round. For others it’s porcelain or ceramic tiles. But for a significant proportion luxury means the comfort of a carpeted floor.
A question we get asked a good deal, therefore, is “are carpets suitable for underfloor heating?”.
The simple answer is ‘yes’ but there are some steps you need to take to get the most out of your underfloor heating system. In this blog we look at how to tackle achieving the flooring finish of your choice.
What’s the Problem With Carpet and Underfloor Heating Systems?
Carpets are designed to help with the insulation of your home. They stop the chill of your sub floor lowering the temperature, so why wouldn’t carpets prevent the heat from your underfloor heating raising the temperature?
1. Choosing a Carpet for Underfloor Heating
Many providers now offer helpful guides to carpets that are compatible with underfloor heating. As a rule of thumb, you should always choose a carpet and underlay with a tog rating no higher than 2.5. This will ensure that the thermal conductivity of your heating system is unimpaired. You may find that carpet takes slightly longer to warm up, but it also retains the heat for longer than other floor coverings.
2. Consult With Your UFH Supplier
Talk to your underfloor heating supplier about the rooms you want to carpet. They will then calculate whether the system will provide you with enough heat. Where we encounter an issue with heat output, RB Liquid Screed installers will often talk through the range of options with a client to find a solution. This could be the use of radiators in certain rooms, or different flooring for certain parts of the house.
3. Make Flooring Plans Before Fitting UFH
If you’re planning to use carpet with an underfloor heating system, ask for guidance before signing a contract with your provider. If they are happy to give advice, and work with you to achieve optimum performance for your system, it’s a good sign of the quality of their work. If however, they suggest that performance is your problem to deal with, you may want to look elsewhere.
